Our Team
The MAPA Steering Committee:
President: Oversees the strategic planning for the MAPA Society and is responsible for promotion and support of academic development within the SPPA.
Sean O’Brady
Sean travelled to Ottawa from his hometown of Montreal to study public administration at our nation’s finest school of public policy and administration. He is currently working for the Public Health Agency of Canada, and will be working as an analyst for Environment Canada in the fall semester. In his spare time, Sean enjoys playing guitar, apocalyptic horror and watching cooking shows with his significant other. In the weekends, you may witness this unapologetic grad student off on some tangent at a local pub.
VP Finance & Administration: Responsible for managing the Society’s finances and developing and implementing a fundraising strategy.
Milana Simikian
Originally from Mother Russia, Milana moved from Toronto to complete her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Carleton University. Before enrolling in the ISE stream at SPPA, she took a year off to travel and teach English in China. Milana is currently working for Aboriginal Northern Affairs Canada and Carbon Management Canada research project. When not at school or work, she enjoys cooking, doing yoga, watching “So You Think You Can Dance,” and spending time outdoors with her boyfriend.
VP Community Relations: Responsible for fostering community in the SPPA and overseeing the MAPA banquet.
Alex Paterson
A native of Guelph, Ontario, Alex is in his second year of the ISE stream at SPPA. Before making the move to Ottawa, he worked for both CBC Newsworld and Greenpeace Canada, as well as doing his undergrad in communications at Western. He currently works for Stratos Inc, a sustainability consulting company, and volunteers his time on the boards of both SIGNALS and ISEMA. He has too much blood in his caffeine stream, spectacularly overspends on vinyl records, and loves talking all things NBA.
VP Communications: Responsible for communications planning and marketing and promotion of the Society.
David McDine
After finishing his Psychology degree at the University of Saskatchewan, David spent a year working as a communications and research coordinator for a few different University departments. David then waved goodbye to the Paris of the Prairies to attend the SPPA program at Carleton. When not working or in class, you’ll find him reading comic books at various coffee shops and pubs around the city.
Concentration Representatives:
The elected concentration representatives are responsible for attending all Management Committee meetings and speaking on behalf of the MAPA Society and individual students if such representation is warranted. The concentration representatives also report to the rest of the MAPA Society executive about issues and decisions that may affect current and prospective MA students.
Public Management Rep – Sheila Molnar
Sheila is in her first year of the program in the public management concentration. Before starting the program she studied political science at the University of Toronto. She’s happy to be back in Ottawa, where she was born and raised, to skate on the canal and visit local ski hills.
Public Policy – Eric Creatchman
Hi there! I’m from Toronto by way of Montréal! My background is in intergovernmental relations and the machinery of government. I’m interested in addressing how social determinants of health can be improved within a multi-level governance framework. I’m looking forward to acting as your representative over this academic year!
International Development – Emily Kent
Emily Kent was born and raised in Ottawa, Ontario. She is currently completing her second year of the MAPA program in the International & Development concentration. In addition, she has a Master of Arts degree in International Studies. Emily enjoys traveling and has volunteered twice in Africa. She also likes to hike, ski, and read in her free time.
Innovation, Science and Environment – David Stephen
David is originally from Toronto, but has spent 7 years of his life in Vancouver. While living on the West coast David became a huge Vancouver Canucks fan. David has an undergraduate degree in Politics and Governance from Ryerson University and is currently studying in the ISE stream. He is primarily interested in water policy.
Professional Development Representative: Responsible for providing student oversight of the co-op program as well as the facilitation and promotion of professional development workshops.
Laura Marshall
Laura hails from a small town on Vancouver Island. A self-described Belgophile, she enjoys singing, running, floor hockey and learning foreign languages. Laura is interested in social policy, development and behavioural economics.
Graduate Students’ Association Representatives:
GSA Representatives are responsible for representing SPPA interests at the GSA.
Cameron Campbell
Cameron is a first year MA student from Halifax, NS. He completed his undergraduate degree in Political Science and Business Administration at Memorial University. Cameron’s academic interests are in the areas of health and education policy. Outside of school Cameron enjoys spending time hiking, camping and rock climbing.
Anna Goldfinch
Anna Goldfinch is a first year MAPA student in the Policy Analysis concentration. She is from the Eastern Townships, Quebec and did her undergraduate degree at Concordia University in Community, Public Affairs and Policy Studies. Her academic interests are child and primary education policy.
PhD Student Representative: Representative for PhD students.
Chris Yordy
Chris Yordy is a PhD student with an emphasis on International and Development Policy. He joins the department coming directly from ‘on the ground’ research and field experiences in Africa. In his Masters work at the University of Guelph, he worked in Ghana and applied transactions costs analysis to evaluate supply chains and fisheries policy. Since then, he has been involved in various shades of project work with development organizations, which ranges from collaboration with VETAID and MEDA in Mozambique to a recent consultancy with the Food and Agriculture Organization Regional Office in Cairo. He looks forward to being an active part of the SPPA community and MAPA Society.
